You know the feeling. You’ve finally done it. You’ve achieved that mythical state of adulting nirvana. Your laundry is done, folded, and put away. Your houseplants are alive—thriving, even. You’ve meal-prepped for the week, your inbox is at zero, and you even managed to meditate for a full three minutes without thinking about that weird thing you said in a meeting three years ago. You are a golden god of competence, a shimmering beacon of stability. You have, against all odds, gotten your shit together.
And then you hear it.
From the metaphorical bathroom of life, a sound echoes, a thunderous roar that shakes the very foundation of your newfound serenity.
FLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUSH.
Suddenly, your perfectly constructed house of cards comes tumbling down. The dog throws up on the new rug. Your boss emails you at 9 p.m. with an “urgent” task that was definitely not urgent two hours ago. Your kid remembers they have a diorama due tomorrow, and it needs to be a historically accurate representation of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, complete with tiny, handcrafted quills.
The toilet of life has been flushed, and it’s trying to take your sanity with it.
We all know this feeling. It’s the universe’s favorite prank. It waits until you’re feeling your most capable, your most organized, your most blissfully unaware, and then it pulls the chain. It’s the surprise car trouble right after you’ve paid off your credit card. It’s the sudden, inexplicable head cold the day before you leave for vacation. It’s your toddler learning how to unlock the pantry and discovering the industrial-sized bag of glitter.
For years, I tried to fight it. I made color-coded schedules. I bought planners with inspirational quotes on every page. I downloaded apps that promised to organize my life into a series of satisfying little checkmarks. I was determined to build a life so structurally sound, so impeccably planned, that no flush could ever shake it.
You can probably guess how that went. My schedules became a testament to my failures. My planners mocked me with their empty, unchecked boxes. My apps sent me passive-aggressive notifications that I just ended up swiping away with a sigh of defeat.
But recently, I’ve had a revelation. What if the goal isn’t to prevent the flush? What if the goal is to learn how to ride the wave?
Because let’s be honest, the flushes are never going to stop. Life is a revolving door of unexpected plumbing problems. So, instead of trying to build a fortress, maybe we should all just invest in a good pair of waterproof boots and a sense of humor.
Here’s my new philosophy: embrace the chaos. Laugh in the face of the overflowing toilet of destiny. When your perfectly planned week goes up in flames, just roast some marshmallows over the embers.
The next time you feel that familiar sense of dread as the waters of fate begin to swirl, just remember: everyone’s toilet gets flushed. We’re all just paddling around in the same bowl, trying to keep our heads above water.
And if you see me out there, frantically trying to build a raft out of glitter and dog vomit, just give me a wave. We’re all in this together.
