LORE UPDATE: The Safety Net Has Been Breached

To the Inner Circle,

We watched them claim the beaches. We tracked them up the ridges in the last file. We even found them waiting in the shadows of the freeway overpasses.

But the infection isn’t just holding the ground anymore. It has entered the grid.

In this new file from the archives, we move deep underground. We enter the County 911 Communications Center—a bunker designed to survive the end of the world. But it wasn’t designed to survive what is coming through the copper lines.

Excerpt from File: The Dispatcher

Macie adjusted her headset. The headache had started an hour ago—a low-pressure throb behind her eyes that synced with the flickering of the fluorescent lights.

BEEP.

A call hit her console. Line 1.

“911, what is the location of your emergency?” Macie asked, her voice calm, practiced, automatic.

Silence. Usually, silence meant shock. Or fear. Macie leaned in. “911, can you hear me?”

Then, a sound. Kr-kr-click. It wasn’t a breath. It sounded like a wire being stripped with a rusty knife.

…Hot… a voice whispered. …So… hot…

It was a genderless, raspy voice. It sounded like dry leaves scraping on pavement. Macie checked the ALI (Automatic Location Identification) screen. The address popped up instantly: 1402 Oakhaven Lane.

Macie froze. She knew that address. The Oakhaven house had burned down in the Great Fire of 2015. The lot had been empty for a decade. Just a concrete slab and weeds. There was no house. There was certainly no landline.

“Ma’am,” Macie said, her voice trembling slightly. “Are you calling from a cell phone?”

…The… wires… are… singing… the voice rasped. …We… are… the… network…

The Lore: This file introduces the Wire Hollow. Unlike the Driftwood Kings (Organic) or the Lithic Hollows (Geologic), the Wire Hollow is a construct of our own infrastructure. It lives in the server racks, the copper lines, and the phantom voltage of the grid. It doesn’t just kill you; it uploads you.
