To the Inner Circle,
We know the “Driftwood Kings” hunt on the beaches. But in this latest file from the Echo-Mythos archives, we are tracking them up the ridges.
High on the Ontario Ridge Trail, the Generals are watching. And they aren’t using driftwood anymore. They are commanding the geology itself.
Excerpt from File: The Stone Ear
Hunter pressed his ear against the sandstone wall of the alcove. His face drained of color. “I hear… screaming. A woman. She’s calling my name.”
“Hunter, stop it,” Kessa whispered. “There’s no one out there.”
“I know,” he choked out. “Because it hasn’t happened yet. I’m hearing the recording of the future. I’m hearing the person who finds our bodies.”
CRACK.
The sound came from the rock wall itself. A section of the sandstone shifted. Like a 3D image popping out of the cliff, a shape pushed itself out of the solid rock. It was a Lithic Hollow—a golem of sharp shale and grinding stone.
It didn’t attack. It reached out a hand made of flint shards and touched the edge of the cave entrance.
The rock of the cliff face began to grow. Like wax melting and reforming, the sandstone lip of the cave extended. It flowed like thick, gritty syrup.
“No!” Hunter roared, lunging for the gap. The creature backhanded him against the wall, knocking him unconscious.
Kessa was alone.
The opening was shrinking. It was now a small window, showing a slice of the darkening sky. The creature stepped back into the wall, merging with the stone, its blue eyes still watching her.
The opening sealed. The last sliver of blue sky vanished. The last breath of fresh wind was cut off.
Darkness. Total, hot, suffocating darkness.
Kessa screamed. She pounded on the rock where the door had been. It was solid. Seamless. She was buried alive in a stone bubble, high on the ridge, left to scream until she became the recording Hunter had just heard.
The Lore: The “Stone Ear” is a natural acoustic trap. The rock absorbs sound but lets nothing out. If you are hiking the ridges and you see a perfect, sheltered alcove… keep walking. The Driftwood Kings are watching from the peaks, and they are always looking for new recordings to add to the library.
